Awesome local bakery. It's one of those places where I can't bring myself to try anything other than the cupcakes because that's what I tried first and they were so damned good I have to get them! Awesome and the place next door makes pretty great pizza and sandwiches. This is a no brainer when you are in West Roxbury!

Service is great! The cakes were just too dense and sweet for us. The red velvet's frosting was extremely heavy and didn't taste like the Red Velvets we are used to in NYC, and the Strawberry Shortcake definitely had an extra generous portion of 'sugar' in it :) No one could finish the cake at the birthday party, sadly. 3 stars for the kind service. 2 stars for the cakes.

"Sugar Bakery" has the best coffee in West Roxbury. They also offer specially coffees and other beverages. Their bakery is my go to place. I love picky up bakery there. It's fresh and oh so good. I feel so proud to bring a box of goodies or a cake to friends. You can stay in or take out. The shop is comfortable. Right next door is "The Real Deal". They have GREAT subs and pizza. Again, to go or stay in. It' a perfect place to meet. The door is open in between shops (the businesses are shared) . One can sit on either side. I speak highly of both shops. Good service and a comfortable place to eat and meet I give both shops an "A". There is street parking and a public lot just across Centre Street. Enjoy!!!

I was highly recommended to reach out to Sugar Bakery by a friend of mine who's a major sweet tooth and loves her desserts! she bought the oreo cookie cake for her niece/nephews 3rd birthday. when i was planning our wedding, i contacted sugar and they generously offered us a sample of a dozen cupcakes to try! we narrowed it down and agreed on strawberry shortcake. i spoke met w/Lynn, the baker, and we discussed the cake. i was such the non-bride and had no real ideas or preferences as to how to design it. she helped me out based on some pinterest pins i had. maybe i should have had some flowers from the florist to add to the top to add a little extra something....but that was more me, than the baker. everyone at our wedding loved the cake!! they couldn't stop talking about it - it was moist and delicious - not too sweet like some cakes/icing can be. i HIGHLY recommend sugar bakery for cakes, cupcakes and cookies (love the mega chip cookies!).

Okay, I am updating my review to five stars because the brambles are so freaking good. This is literally a review for the brambles, not the bakery in itself. I was lucky enough to be in the area again and so I came in again to get four brambles. 99 cents each and SOOOOOOO delicious. No need to get anything else here. I bit into it and took the time to appreciate it - the pastry is REALLY flaky. I was observing that the pastry had very distinct layers and there is a thick crust of granulated sugar on top. The filling is just the right amount of sweet/tart and a perfect consistency - not too sticky. This is like the best mini berry pie or fanciest, most delicious pop tart you've ever had. For real, this is top stuff and I don't say that lightly. I will definitely dream of these and miss them. I can say it's one of the best food items I've eaten in the Boston area, up there with a Mike's plain cannoli. Don't waste your calories or belly room on anything else except for the brambles.

Okay so normally things like this don't bother me but this one was huge. My son had his baptism today and I figured I could get the cake at Sugar. Had heard great things about it and I love getting their cupcakes from the Real Deal in Jamaica Plain. When I ordered the cake a week in advance, I ordered a half sheet strawberry short cake. The day of the party I was given a 14" round cake with a little bit of strawberries in the middle of the cake. The cross that was placed on the cake looks like something my son could have done and he's 6 months and the writing looked horrible and rushed. I was extremely disappointed with this cake and not to mention it couldn't feed everyone at the party. Needless to say I will no longer have anything to do with Sugar

Courtesy of a Groupon voucher deal, we picked up an 8" Strawberry Shortcake $28.99 and a large cannoli $3.35 for nearly half off. The cannoli was meant for another's tummy, so I didn't get to enjoy it, but... I did scoop up the sizeable glop of filling that had stuck to the paper plate that the bakery had used to carry the pastry before they placed it into a box for the trip home. Mmmm... creamy dairy goodness... The Strawberry Shortcake consisted of two layers of light cake (cake, not short cake biscuit), filled with fresh whipped cream and a semi-cooked strawberry filling, topped with several strawberry halves. It looked yummy, and was yummy. Not too sweet, fruity, creamy, goodness. *** 12/2013 visit *** Decided to try to well touted Brambles (99 cents) - a light flaky pastry encasing a seedless raspberry filling. They're actually pretty small at about 2 3/4 inches in diameter, but they are tasty, and I preferred it over the raspberry turnover ($1.79) in all manners except for cost. The pastry in the turnover was a bit thick.

Visited on a Sunday afternoon. Nothing exciting to tell: neither the espresso nor the espresso eclair tasted like anything. Regular coffee was cold, and tasteless too. The ambiance not particularly exciting either.

I'm not much for sweets, but their mini pies and tarts are great! If you get there early they have hot cross buns and their specialty cookie is a must-try!!!

This is a cute little place in West Roxbury where I like to stop to get a treat before or after I hit up Boomerangs next door. There's always an array of decadent, colorful desserts ranging from cupcakes to cookies to fruit tarts. Everything I've tried has been fresh. The lattes are great too. Only complaint would be I wish the older man behind the counter was a little more friendly.

Cream puffs, mocha cakes, whoopie pies, half moons, birthday cakes, I've tried just about everything at Sugar and it has never, ever disappointed, Carol loves the brambles but I am usually face deep in a whoopie pie to bother- this place is da bomb!

Everything I've gotten at Sugar has always been great (so sad the Roslindale location closed); breakfast muffins & pastries, fruit tarts, and cookies (including their signature cookie the bramble) included. Cupcakes are great, but I do love that you can get cake slices (boston cream pie!) and mini tarts (key lime!) for when you just can't commit to one whole thing. Today I walked in and purchased a cake for a birthday right out of the case. !!! The staff was kind enough to help me decide on a flavor and write a birthday message on it for me. The pastries can be a little on the pricier side, so I was pleasantly surprised to learn this beautiful 10" red velvet cake was only $25. And it was delicious! Everything is fantastic, but my favorites there are the cigars, fruit tarts, and m&m cookies. Oh and they make authentic sfogliatelle that pass my Italian grandmother's test. That's no easy feat. They also serve hot & iced coffee in the back to wash down all the sugary goodness.

This place is the right balance of oldschool bakery (they have all the goodies my grandma would have picked up on her way home from the hair salon, back in the day) and new-school technique and flavor. They are super reasonably priced, friendly, and everything I've had is delicious. I gave up sweets for Lent and THIS was the place I chose to break the fast of 40 days. They did not let me down. Some favorites: Red Velvet Whoopie Pie: Perfect moist cake, tangy-sweet cream-cheese filling BRAMBLES - Fruit-filled pastry shells. SO DELICIOUS Chocolate/Vanila cupcake - a classic done RIGHT Scones - moist and light, not heavy and dry like so many other bakeries Only thing I wasn't super-impressed w/so far was the caramel cupcake. Conveniently located next to 'Real Deal' (and share a door) so you can stop in for lunch/dinner there and pick up dessert on your way out. LOVE.

For some reason we thought this place was organic but it came that it was just a no preservative place which is also great Food was delish I had French Toast with eggs and turkey sausage Sausage could have been cooked a bit more and eggs also but Canberry Mimosa and everything else great

Apparently all the sugar goes into the baked goods, 'cause you won't find any sweetness in the staff. We got a variety of goodies here - cupcakes, blueberry tart, cupcakes and a couple brambles. They were all good. Not terrific. Not bad. Good. The guy who helped us though was anything but sweet. He had all the charm of wool underwear. He was an older guy and I could tell he was just wishing he could tell us to get off his lawn. Oh well. If you need something sweet and are in the area, It'll do. Kinda.

We were there this past Saturday and got a few cupcakes and cream puffs. I have to start with the cream puffs... They were amazing.. The cream was so good. We also got the following cupcakes: Oreo, peanut butter, caramel, and vanilla. All were good but my favorite was between the caramel and the peanut butter. I loved how the caramel cupcake had caramel in the middle... Made me wish the peanut butter one had a glob of peanut butter too lol. I will definitely be back to try the red velvet and carrot cake cupcakes, as they were out when we went. I also want to try a couple other pastries from the reviews here on yelp. And of course another cream puff!! :)

I was torn with a 3 or 4-star review ~ actually, I have been thinking about it since last night, so this really did bother me.... but I'm going with the 3 stars. Went in yesterday around 1:30PM to pick up some goodies to bring to my friend's place; she is 8 months pregnant, and deserves some snacks... and her husband and I do as well. Ordered two half moons (which were good), two whoopie pies (I love a good whoopie), and two cupcakes (caramel and a chocolate with a shark on it for "shark week".... duh-duh, duh-duh, duh-duh.....). The two cupcakes were in a container that smushed both of them (maybe they need a higher container, because to put less frosting would be downright criminal), and the shark took a dive into the blue frosting. I guess you really can kill a shark easily. Alas, the cupcakes both wound up being dry (maybe that is why the shark was dead?), but the saving grace was that I ate a Bramble in the car. I guess on a repeat visit I will stick with Brambles and other items, but just say NO to the cupcakes. The icing on the (cup)cake was the surly girl who waited on me (so, Sugar Bakery, if you are reading this... that's 1:30-ish on Saturday 18th): dark hair, brown/black glasses and ZERO personality. No hello, barely a "thank you" and would not engage anyone in conversation. Even the ladies at the Shaw's bakery like to talk... and I actually LIKE those cupcakes (at half the price)!

I went to this bakery today for the first time and was immediately excited to see so many of my favorite pastries. They accidentally gave me a cheesecake instead of the cannoli I ordered, and gave someone else the last St. Joseph that I had ordered. When I went back to show them the mistake they were very friendly and made a point to fix things. They made TWO more St. Josephs for me, a cannoli and gave me a cup of coffee with no charge. I don't think they could have handled themselves better, and am very pleased. To top it off, the cannoli filling was the best I've had in years!

Have had a few slices of cake from this place, chocolate and red velvet. Coworkers set high expectations so when I tried it... It was just Mehhh. Would go but it is kinda pricey and I just don't want to pay that much for a cake.

Sugar stands on the wrong side of mediocre. The "freshly squeezed orange juice" seemed like tropicana. The roast beef hash and the accompanying potatoes were exceedingly bland. There's really no compelling reason to go here, even if you live relatively close by.

The cakes I ordered were very nicely done. There was a mix up with the colors but the management handled it professionally. I am really happy doing business with them, so happy in fact that I will keep going back!

I love sugar! This is the place to go whenever I want to arrive somewhere without an empty hand. The staff are always helpful and friendly. I have never had anything here that I didn't like and I've tried many things. The brambles are wonderful. The key lime pie is amazing. Chocolate mousse is delicious. You can't go wrong!

Why does this place only have 10 pictures? Their food is gorgeous! I've been to Sugar twice, both times for breakfast. I'm so so glad it's a short, easy drive from my apartment in Jamaica Plain. It makes for a perfect place to get an awesome breakfast in the am! I've only had the breakfast sandwich to remember (eggs, cheddar cheese, panchetta, and fig jam on a biscuit). DELISH. The second time, I ordered the same, but they were out of fig jam so I asked for strawberry. I know. Weird. But tasty! My boyfriend got the french toast and said it was one of the best he ever had. It only comes with 2 slices (albiet large slices), however. But he loved it (and he is the pickiest eater I know, bless his heart). OH. Oh yes. Their hash browns. YUMZO. Though very dark in color, there is no burnt taste. They're salty and a little crispy and always cooked through. I don't even put ketchup on them (but you should feel free to). The second time I went there was a 20 minute wait. Use that time to check out the menu, and the bakery in the back. My two gripes are the price, and service. $8 for a breakfast sandwich? This is sad-making. Also, their service ranges from bad to fine. It's hard to get ahold of the waiters occasional. HELLLOOO? Yes, I'm waving at you. They have a creative menu with fresh ingredients. Delicioso!

Need to hire a new receptionist. 10+ people waiting and several tables were empty she'd rather talk to other waitresses and wander aimlessly before cleaning off table to seat waiting guests. I think waitresses knew she was not doing her job because our waitress apologized several times for the wait.

Is it possible to give a negative star? We were craving for some good dessert, and what we got was crapload of sugar. Oh yeah, the place is called Sugar. Their pudding tasted like bland scrambled egg with a texture comparable to semi-cooked creme brûlée. Their mocha cake is almost as hard as the cover of my iPhone. Their mini-tarts were $9.90 for six pieces of sugar-loaded, almost tasteless little circles of so-called crapastry!!! We will never come back here again.

Fantastic selection, huge cupcakes, light and airy cake, and delicious frosting. Went for a 6 pack: Vanilla lovers, chocolate lovers, chocolate mint, two caramel, and a granny smith. All were fantastic, and it took some time to clean up the caramel after it had oozed all over me. My only question is why introduce the granny smith cupcake now, at the end of the Winter/beginning of the Spring? This cupcake - along with it's friend, the macintosh cupcake - would be best suited for the Fall, no? Also went for a black-and-white cookie, which was busting with frosting. Could have eaten seven of them.

I wish I could give Sugar 0 stars. I ordered a cake from there a week in advance. When my pickup day came I watched the girl search for my cake in a fridge behind several other boxes. I asked her how long the cake had been in the fridge and she shrugged. I later found out from a former employee that the baker sometimes makes the cakes 3 to 4 days in advance and just keeps them in the fridge until the pickup day comes. This terrible business strategy became quite apparent, as my cake was dry. I also noticed that the baker, Lynn I believe is her name, is extremely RUDE to the girls who work at Sugar. She berated the girls as if they were slaves, yelling at them in front of a crowd of 10+ customers. Seems to me that the baker needs to lay off the cigarettes as well as the pathetic power trip she's on. Message to baker with the voice of a chain smoker and the face of a recovering junkie: you work at a bakery probably making not much more than minimum wage, maybe you should spend a little less time harassing the poor high school girls who unfortunately have to work alongside you and spend a little more time ensuring the paying customers that their cakes are not dry upon pickup. Please show the girls as well as the paying customers a little respect.

The text that goes along with a 3-star rating is "A-OK", and that's exactly how I would rate Sugar. It's an A-OK bakery. Not the best, but far from the worst. We were pleased that despite being there later in the afternoon, they still had a great selection of cupcakes and other treats. I chose an oreo cupcake and a half-moon (black and white cookie) to take home. The half-moon was delicious. The cupcake was good, but not as good as Cupcake Charlies or Babycakes. Prices are decent. It was difficult to maneuver around several customers packed into a tight floorspace, which made browsing difficult. And the ordering process was a bit chaotic. I'd definitely return if I were in the area, but I wouldn't make a special trip for it.

We ordered a cake here over the summer for my son's birthday. The whole process was very easy - ordered a "custom" cake in almost no time & they gave my lil' guy a cookie as we were leaving. When we picked up the cake, it was more affordable than I thought it would be, which was a nice surprise. The cake more than fed our crowd & everyone seemed to enjoy it (except my son & I - as we don't eat cake).

We drove from our cushy digs in North Quincy to Sugar to try out the cupcakes here. While they were good, they weren't better than my top 3 cupcakes spots. I loved the interior of this spot...it was very cozy, although it was crowded on this particular day and we had a hard time getting a look at all of the goodies in the cases. I was surprised by how many other offerings they had beyond cupcakes. The family in front of us bought a few really cute and yummy looking cookies, for example. The breads looked very enticing as well. I'd definitely go back to try their offerings but this won't be my first choice for a cupcake.

I don't know how i haven't reviewed Sugar yet. My first Sugar experience was at a party where they brought in beautiful, creative, and absolute DELICIOUS, moist cupcakes with decadent buttercream frosting. It sounds over the top, but I'd never had a cupcake that good. I probably ate three cupcakes that night. So I find out that the bakery was Sugar. I was living in JP at the time but knew that they brought baked goods to the Real Deal in JP. Sampled more cupcakes, nom nom nom. Moved close to this location, loved it even more. More variety, creative, beautiful. Everything in the store I just want to shove in my face. My mom likes to get all sorts of pastries and adorably refers to Sugar as "The Cupcake Place" as if there is no other place that makes cupcakes. My man and I like to get cupcakes and brambles here. Even though I'm a healthy chick these days, I still come in and get cupcakes and brambles. I just eat them slowly over a couple of days. I hope to never have to give up cupcakes or Sugar, ever. That would be a good life. And they're doing my wedding cupcakes too. So yeah. I'm probably as in love with Sugar as I am with my guy.

BRAMBLES! I bought some for my office & it was like a Somalian food drop! I was afraid to put my fingers near them as everyone raved about them. I grew up in NYC and you can find 5-10 bakeries per mile so I say this with some expertise. This guys are the real deal. Great selection. Awesome taste. Spotlessly clean interior. Very friendly staff.

This is my go to place for half-moons. Consistently good, absolutely delicious and I wouldn't think of going anywhere else. FYI - these are also called black and white cookies. Brought a chocolate with raspberry filling cake to a Labor Day party this past September and it was a hit. Truly yummy.

They say that a spoonful will help the medicine go down....Sugar Bakery in West Rox...will make damned sure that cough syrup is DOWN DOWN DOWN. Seriously - a LOT of sugar (...in/on everything) - a diabetic's nightmare?...or a 5-yer-old-at-heart's dream?! The small (but well-arranged) bakery is clean and trendy. The girl helping pack up our treats laughed at my cookie joke, but otherwise seemed bored as Hell at her job. No matter! - I was too busy looking around at the elevated trays of colorful Italian cookies along the wall (yumm - reminded me of Modern Pastry in Boston). A wonderful array of cupcakes (strawberry milkshake, mocha, oreo, red velvet, etc etc), cookies, canoli, cream puff, and on and on and on. Yes, they look marvelous - but the treats are a little TOO sweet for my liking (DELICIOUS, yes...but I couldn't eat all of the 1/2cup of frosting on my cupcake). My canoli was stuffed with cool, creamy filling and the shell was delicate - when I bit down, the cookie crumbled, and I was left with a handful of canoli cream (....kinda hott, a mess sure...but a delicious mess it was). The price for two cupcakes, a tiny tart, a mini canoli, and a cookie = under 10$ (not terrible). I can see myself popping in for a piece of pound cake after delicious munching at Real Deal next door.

Great looking bakery, nice ambiance, great cupcakes, friendly staff! In West Roxbury? Need some sugar? Want a quick sugar rush following by a depressing state of sugar low mixed with want of more great cupcakes or other delights? I gave it 5 stars because I had no reason not to! Stop reading, and go!

Good selection of pastries. The blueberry tart is not as good as it looks, less crumbly and flakey than you would like. The fig square is very good. None of the pasties I tasted were overly sweet even the chocolate chip cookie which is nice.

Sugar!!!! So good. The cookies are my favorite any kind, they are all good. The cupcakes are still my favorite but just had a variety of cookies and they were all so good. Took some home for the fourth get together and everyone flipped!

A Spoon Full of Sugar Makes the Medicine Go Down. If you haven't come out to West Roxbury, the Sugar Bakery should be reason enough to get in your car and take a little road trip to Centre Street. My suggestion would be to make this your lunch time plan as the bakery is very conveniently attached to the Real Deal Deli. I've had the Boneless Buffalo Sub which was amazing. There are two sizes, a small and a large. Unless you haven't eaten for several days or plan on having your sub for lunch and dinner I would suggest getting the small. You can also pick from wraps and paninis as well as a bunch of plates that you can get for your super bowl party! But, back to the bakery. You can get anything from gourmet cupcakes, cakes, cinnamon rolls and cookies to a flat tire which is only $1. You should also keep in mind that breakfast baked goods are half price after 3pm! Needless to say, there isn't enough I can say about this bakery and I truly look forward to eating my apple and walnut turnover. So...let's review... 1. Haven't been to West Roxbury yet? I think it's time to get some sugar. 2. Stop at the Real Deal Deli for a snack or a full on lunch. 3. Looking for a bargain on your baked goods? Stop by after 3pm and get the morning's breakfast items for half off at the Sugar Bakery. Until the next review!

Sugar is adorable. Very hip and modern. The cupcakes are stunning and they are as good as everyone says they are. There was a wide variety of flavors, even cotton candy, which did not sound remotely good to me. I almost died when the woman said there was a peanut butter cupcake, as peanut butter is easily one of my favorite things in this world. The peanut butter cupcake was good, however, my favorite was the simple yellow cake with chocolate frosting. The cake was perfectly moist and delicious. The chocolate frosting was not too sweet, not too hard and not overpowering. In my opinion, it was the perfect cupcake. At $2.39 a cupcake, I'm very glad Sugar is so far away - or else I may eat far too many!

Yes there are so many bakeries in Boston and I just happen to live closeby to this one.. .Their stuff is so goood! :) I love their brambles (their speciality) - their crust is light, soft and sugary.. The filling tastes like fresh berries. Just yummy. Their Sfogliatelli is the BEST in the area-- seriously, you have to try them. Plus, they sell them in small sizes which is perfect for me. My favorite is their raspberry turnovers - I often get them for breakfast.

I'd go the extra half star but am really surprised at the superlatives this place gets. First scone I got I threw out. And I love scones and never throw sweets out. It was like the blueberries had gone bad. Have had a decent pumpkin whoopie pie and cupcake but yesterday's brownie was this cushy thing with a puffy consistency and a sheet of something on top that seemed like it had been baked with parchment paper instead of the powdered sugar coating, I'll throw the rest of it out. Bad enough that I had to write about it (but the bramble for $.99 was okay). Drive the extra 5 min to Fornax or 5 more min to Canto 6 for bakery majesty.

I thought sugar was just so-so. A perfectly good bakery, though perhaps not one worth going out of your way. I'm never really over in West Roxbury, though found myself close by at the arboretum recently. We jaunted the 10 minutes down centre st to check it out. It was relatively messy and a little noisy (think DD versus a Starbucks), but we were coming for the sugar, not necessarily for the atmosphere. The girl working gave me the run down of the cupcakes (which looked AWESOME), and then answered a few questions for my friend. She called a napoleon a neapolitan, and told us that something which clearly wasn't was creme brulee...but she was nice about it? I got the mint oreo cupcake - REALLY good. The Napolean was yummy too, although very hard to eat regardless of fork vs. hands. My mom makes better grapenut pudding but hey, you can't be a rock star at everything (or, at least, if you are, you get more stars). Anyways - I thought it was good, not great. There are other bakeries I prefer, but if you live in the vicinity this is probably a very good choice.

I can only review the black and white cookie because I did not have the time (or the room in my waistline) to try anything else. The black and white cookie was what I imagine you would get if you sawed off the top of a cupcake, and covered half with chocolate frosting and half with vanilla frosting. Heaven. It was everything you want from two cupcakes but didn't make you feel like a huge slob. Already planning my next black-and-white cookie visit.

Mmmm cupcakes. I was a bit overwhelmed upon first entering Sugar - I knew I wanted a cupcake, but who knew there would be so many different kinds to choose from? The two my boyfriend and I ended up settling on - cappuccino, and yellow cake with chocolate frosting - were both delicious. Soft and moist and not sickeningly sweet. My only complaint was that the cappuccino one almost had too much frosting (and anyone who knows me knows that the frosting is my favorite part!)...there was almost more frosting than there was cupcake! Not sure how I hadn't been to Sugar yet after living in the area for a few months, but I will definitely be back to satisfy my sweet tooth!

Sugar makes the best macaroon in the area. The macaroons come in two flavors lemon and chocolate. The cookie is a chewy yet crispy ball of coconut topped with a crunchy frosting. Biting into the cookie, there is a surprise mid layer of mousse below the frosting. Simply heavenly.

This place has grown on me with hindsight (admittedly, it's only about 18 hours of hindsight). This was stop #1 on our pre-Christmas cupcake crawl, and we sort of fell in love with the idea of it. Sugar is cute and neighborhood-y; it's got exposed brick and nice lights and a cute little seating area, and the staff is just so nice. The display case is filled with amazing looking cupcakes and our mouths started watering instantly (I should add that my friend was very impressed by how stocked they were--everything was obviously fresh and beautiful. We didn't feel like we were eating day-old stuff, or even hours-old stuff). We ended up sharing a milky way and a cotton candy- truth be told, neither tasted exactly like a milky way or like cotton candy, but they were both utterly gorgeous, and pretty good (i.e. the cake was light, airy, and delicious. My only complaint would be that the frosting-to-cupcake ratio was way off- the cotton candy cupcake was about 3/4 frosting. It's akin to being 5'2" and having 3" of your height consist of your hair. It's just kind of weird). Less exciting were the sugar cookies which tasted unbelievably dry (but I'm willing to cut them some slack considering they must have made a million of these things for Christmas). Finally, I'l just say Sugar looks particularly good after Babycakes- I had anticipated loving Babycakes and finding Sugar mediocre, but it was just the opposite- Sugar was the kind of place I'd visit again even though I'm still not quite exactly sure where West Roxbury is.

I love cupcakes. LOVE THEM. So today, I stopped by to pick up a half moon/black and white (which I've had before, and I liked). I figured I'd get a cupcake. They looked pretty awesome. I think it was the worst cupcake I've ever had. I don't throw cupcakes away - it just doesn't happen. But this thing was gross. The icing was super super sugary like cheap grocery sheet cake and the cupcake was stale and dry. 2 stars because I've had other things there that I liked. Maybe like 2.5 stars but the cupcake was SO SO BAD. Gross. Sad. At least it wasn't too expensive.

It's illegal for scones to be that good and half off after 3PM, right? Indeed, all the breakfast goodies are half off after 3. There's an obesity law against that somewhere on the books, I'm sure of it.

This is absolute sin. Sugar brings about the same blissful and guilty feelings of as one might experience while spooning their way down to the bottom of a cookie dough tub. It feels bad, but it feels so soooo good. Their cupcakes are jaw-dropping. Seriously... you take a look at one from a distance and wonder... "Well, I do want it... but can I handle it? Can I... take it all in?" This is all about indulgence. Go for it, I say.

sugar sugar sugar sugar sugar sugar sugar sugar sugar sugar sugar sugar these cupcakes make me high. After trying Sugar cupcakes at The Real Deal in JP, a visit to the main bakery was in order. Though the cuppies here do not resemble my favorite ones from my childhood per say, they are still *HEAVEN*. The cakes are fresh, moist, and complement the frosting perfectly. The butter cream frosting is the ideal amount, smooth, and not too sweet. Presentation is always beautiful - usually layered & decorated with one or more of the following: powdered sugar, chocolate powder, chocolate shavings, chocolate syrup, caramel, fruit jelly, edible confetti, sprinkles, and/or small cookies (for seasonal decor). I've consumed over 10 of the 40+ different cupcakes, favorites so far: oreo, peanut butter, lemon, & vanilla lover. The other confections are okay (I've had better elsewhere), though I can't say I've tried them all (BIG selection). My mom loves the mocha & strawberry jelly roll? Room for improvement? They really need labels. Friendlier service would be nice too. A note to the emotionless girls behind the counter: you work at a bakery that specializes in cupcakes, SMILE! So really, the 5 stars are for the cupcakes. Yes, Sugar has even inspired me to start baking and decorating my own.

They have Milky Way cupcakes. They have peanut butter cupcakes. They have Oreo. Cotton Candy. Chocolate Lovers. Raspberry. Regular. Marshmellow. The list goes on and on. And everyone one of them is piled high with frosting and whatever else they can fit. They are incredible. And they have a number of other cookies, cakes, pastries, etc. and things that look great as well. But I haven't even gotten there yet. Sugar Bakery is off the hook.

Okay, so as many of you know, I am picky with my cupcakes. If Barbara Ann isn't delivering them then typically am disappointed if I get them elsewhere. With that being said, I love, love, LOVE the cupcakes from Sugar. I swerved to the side of the road to park in West Roxbury to stop in, as I knew the cupcakes were stellar from the Yelp Elite event at Mizu. I picked up a half dozen cupcakes, which will set you back $12.99 (I think that was what my total was) for a birthday surprise for my mother in law and I didn't feel ripped off in the least. A single cupcake is $2.36 as mentioned before, and I feel like that is completely reasonable. The cupcakes are super moist, have some serious flavor through out, and the frosting is super yummy no matter what flavor you get. I had a fluffernutter, which was AWESOME. It got a little melty, but really, it's not a good cupcake experience if it's too clean. My cupcake was filled and layered, so it was heavy on the frosting and goo......yum. I picked out an Oreo for Jesse and he loved it as well. The service was really friendly, and they have a big selection of other pastries and cakes, as well as lots of beverages to enjoy there or to go. Sugar is attached to The Real Deal sandwich place, which looked really good too. No doubt, we'll be back again when we're craving crazy, layered cupcakes.

It's amazing how much in the universe is left to chance. Your birth for example. Or my happening upon Sugar. After a less-than-stellar visit to a certain falafel outlet, I spotted Sugar right when I was in need of something to hit the fabled spot. If I wasn't sold on this place before counting no less than 400 people walking with bags and boxes of goodies from Sugar, I was definitely ready after Yelping it on my Blackberry. (Yes, I'm a beast.) Lo and behold, Sugar was like a Patriot Missile and my sweet tooth was a rogue, aerial threat. Initially, I was a bit thrown off by the waitstaff sitting, aimlessly around a corner window as I walked up to the building. They looked about as productive as the Bush administration. If they were perched on a stoop, an old man would've chased them away with a broom, berating them for being sitabouts and good-for-nothings. To my surprise, the service was quick and accurate. A clerk jumped up from her seat and gave all of her teenage attention to us. Something about her demeanor made me think she hated her job, but hey, that's not my problem. Undoubtedly, upon entering this place, your eye will immediately be drawn to the glass case of treats. Cupcakes, cookies, cakes, shmakes; they've got it all. Everything looks delectable and packs a lot of case appeal. I spent a sizable chunk of my time just trying to hone in on what the hell I wanted. When the order was finally delivered, it came to like $2.12 for a bunch of stuff. Needless to say, the pricing here is quite reasonable. The cupcakes were better than Kickass in Davis Square. And while I'm at it... The staff at Sugar didn't give me a dissertation on their cupcakes. There wasn't any palpable ego in the air. And Sugar's boxes didn't have cutouts for their precious cupcakes (heaven forbid these works of art posing as cupcakes exhibit some smearing of their beautiful exteriors). And they didn't cost two organs and a pint of blood. You get the idea. Anyway. Go to this place, I encourage you. Everything I tried was deliciously memorable.

Great Whoopie Pies. Believe me, I have an expert in my family who calls them the best in Boston. The butter cream frosting on the simple vanilla cupcake will also make you weak in the knees. The shop, the design, the energy of the place all feels inviting and hip while the display case is a thing of beauty. On the "not so great side": not particularly friendly teenage girls working the counter, a bunch of generally dry cookies and mediocre muffins.

I found this place through a group on deal. The selection and quality is great. Reminds me of Clear Flour in Brookline but Sugar bakery offers more pastries and desserts. We got several kinds of pastries, muffins and small cakes, all yummy. I also ordered a raspberry lime rickey which was delicious. Can't wait to go back.

We got a two tier, custom cake from Sugar for my son's 1st birthday party. It was incredibly delicious (many guests told me they don't usually like cake but they loved this). It was really beautiful - I gave them a picture of a cake design I liked and Sugar's version was even better! Lynn (the baker) was so generous when we went there for cake tasting. Their prices are great and they only need 48 hours notice for custom orders unlike Party Favors which asks for 10 days notice and is not nearly as delicious. We had marble cake with vanilla buttercream - I highly recommend it!

Muffins? Yum. Cupcakes? Yum Yum. Birthday Cakes? *Insert Homer drool* These guys know how to bake and the variety will always keep the place fresh! They're now my official go-to bakery and have even been charged by my coworkers to bring in muffin offerings on a weekly basis. Good times!!

ugh. normally i would give this place 5 stars. idk who they hired but the new people helping you behind the counter are extremely rude. went in around 6:30 tonight to hopefully get some cannoli and lobster tails. out of lobster tails :( the girl though rudely explained that they usually run out at 6:30...and i was thinking okay...darn just missed it. What bothered me more was she was mopping the floor and not really helping us with our order at all. ALSO. **HEALTH HAZARD* stopped mopping, using the same plastic gloves to then handle the pastries we did decide to order. there wer plenty of other customers in the store too you would think they would stop trying to clean for a few minutes and give good customer service. but please don't touch a dirty mop and then my eclair. Her whole attiude the whole time sucked. I'll be going back again because normally service is friendly but these management need to train their girls better about customer service. I work in the industry and word of mouth can kill a place's reputation. There were other people trying to order as well and they were just being completely ignored. ALSO...asked for a boston cream cupcake. came home unpacked my bag and it was a red velvet...sad. i know they were right next to each other in the case. but i went to baking and pastry school and the different b/w the two is pretty hard to mess up.. Maybe if she was actually paying attention to her customers we would have gotten the right pastry. Also. we got a total of 5 pastries and everytime we ordered one it was a scathing response of "is that it?" like...can you please be a NICE PERSON?! ugh. will gladly write a 5 star review once they get better service. also if you have customers coming in still late in the afternoon looking for lobster tails...up your par for the day and make more?? I asked for cannolis too and she just yelled at me "we;re out of the filling." like...can you please be polite?

I have not been to the bakery, but have had cupcakes from here twice now. They are by far the BEST cupcakes I have ever had (and if you look at my reviews, I'm always on the hunt for a good cupcake). My favorite is the cotton candy cupcake, which the frosting really tastes like cotton candy. These are so moist, the flavors are original and dead on. The frosting is wonderful without being overly sweet. Again, perfect cupcake. I need to go to the bakery to see what other items they have. Hopefully they also do macarons (another favorite sweet of mine) These beat the cupcakes at: Party Favors-Brookline Kick Ass Cupcakes- Sommerville Crumbs-New York Magnolia-New York Cafe on the Common-Waltham Hello Cupcakes-DC Georgetown Cupcakes-DC Bakery on the Common-Natick Bovas-Boston Modern Pastry-Boston Sweet-Cambridge, Boston

Really cool looking bakery/cafe. There are so many different varieties of cookies, cupcakes, etc. Lots of tables to sit at and friendly service. I got 2 cupcakes vanilla/ choc and a black and white cookie. The cupcakes were decorated very fancy. I watched children look at them in awe as they threw their faces up against the glass. Cupcake taste test: Not the home made taste I was looking for. They were very moist and spongey, obviously from a mix. First taste reminded me of those Duncan Hines super moist cake mixes mom would occasionally whip up. The frosting wasn't any better. It was the typical, from the tub, sticky sweet icing that doesn't really dry all the way and sticks to everything. This type of combination gave me an unimpressed vibe of these cakes. While its going to please most people, I am looking for something a little more grown up. The black and white cookie was better. If I were in the area again I would probably go back to try something else.

Ok, I made a B-line to this place after reading about them in the Globe online. They are in a good location, right on the main drag of Centre St. in W. Roxbury, pretty easy to spot. I did become slightly overwhelmed once I walked in. They share space with their neighbors, the Real Deal Deli, and there was a lot of foot traffic between them. A huge display case showed off all of the cuppy delights. Further towards the back is where you get into more of the cookies and other types of cakes, breads, etc. I was definitely intrigued by the thought that went into the design of some of the cuppies, some looking like 2 layered cupcakes. Even flavors that I'd rarely seen or heard of...made it hard not to stray from the mission. The basic vanilla/vanilla. I got home with my 2 "vanilla lovers", and am happy to say that they were good! It may look like a lot on top, but breaks down to about 35/65 on the frosting/cake ratio. The frosting has a nice amount of vanilla and is quite delicate in texture. The cake is light on flavor and moist. Definitely tastes like someone made this by hand, and recently. I feel confident about a return trip when I'm in that area of the city!

I ordered from them for my sisters shower a week in advance. Granted I did not pick up the order so I have nothing to say about the place but they did forget to make the large cookie tray, boo. I would call next time prior to picking up to make sure they had everything when placing a large order. We had the strawberry shortcake and a mix of cupcakes. The strawberry shortcake was to die for, a great option instead of a regular cake. It was light and not too sweet. If you like sweets go for the cupcakes, perfect indulgence. Prices were definably reasonable.

Not bad for a chocolate lover's cupcake a little on the small side but tall enough I couldn't get my big mouth on top of it lol:-) Quality of the cake was about average and the frosting was a solid good not great or average the price i forget it was cheap at only 2.50 or something the m and m cookie was average. It is an option but def not worth going out of your way for.

Maryland, my Maryland, is a fairly bakery free area, so I am pretty lenient in judging bakery qualifications. You have baked goods? They are pretty? They are pretty tasty? Ok, you're good. And Sugar has a really nice black and white cookie. Additionally, the whoopee pie (I still cannot get over the fact that such a thing exists with such a name) is possibly my favorite dessert ever and I curse my parents for making me grow up south of WhoopePieLand. However, because I did spend time south (even farther south than MD) of whoopee pie land, I have a peeve, and this is why Sugar gets 4 stars: Key Lime pies are never never never NEVER supposed to be green. There is no reason to make them green. Only children want desserts that will flouresce under blacklight, and children do not generally like key lime pie. While I'm complaining, I will add this (and it's possible that Sugar does the right thing, but I don't know since they probably wouldn't let me hang around their kitchen): key limes are a type of lime the size of a ping pong ball. You cannot make a real key lime pie using Persian limes (the big ones at most groceries.) The end.

The one and only negative about Sugar? Their location. The area itself is nice, sure, but unless you drive or live in the area, taking the T there is sort of a hike. That said, Sugar is absolutely my favorite bakery in Boston. Their cupcakes are just out of this world. Peanut butter. Boston cream. Carrot. Snickers. Maple Walnut. Ugh. The list goes on and on, and they're the best I've ever had. Sorry, Sweet. Sorry, Kickass Cupcakes. The pastry display case goes on from there. I almost get melancholy when I look at it, because for a few moments, I regret not weighing 700lbs and being able to just eat my way through everything they have there. You could really just choose pastries at random from the case and be in heaven while you eat them. Very clean, unique, friendly vibe, and the desserts are all wildly photogenic to boot. If only they didn't disappear in the time it takes for me to get my camera out of my pocket.

Really yummy stuff and a super cute interior. The whoopie pies are the best I've had anywhere and so so cheap - you are definitely not paying North End prices here. The chocolate chip cookies are to die for, they absolutely melt in your mouth. Cupcakes are inventive with loads of frosting and toppings. But it's the Whoopie Pies that steal the show. They have a bathroom that is always very clean. They serve Seattle's Best Coffee which is delicious hot, but I've never really liked their iced coffee. I think they refrigerate it too long in too large of a batch so it never tastes fresh. Other than that, highly recommended.

I'm enjoying the raspberry cookie I bought there as I type this. It smells wonderful in here! The cases are full of perfectly arranged baked goods (J. admired the symmetry of the pastries, commenting that a lot of bakeries don't take the time to make things look that organized.)

So my boyfriend and I have tried many cupcake places in MA and so far this is one of our favs. The staff was great and did not get annoyed as we had trouble deciding at first. A client recommended the location and the chocolate peanut butter cupcakes. We purchased a dozen in a variety of flavor. We were very happy that the cupcakes were not only beautifully decorated but very tasty and not dry.....We have gone to a few places like Kick-Ass cupcake, Sweet, and Whole foods and all had great presentation but the cake was soooooo dry and not worth the money....So glad someone told us about Sugar :)

Awesome cupcakes with great frosting. The brambles are good, but not nearly as good as the original brambles that Hanley's Bakery had. The previous brambles were bigger, thicker crust and the raspberry filling was more authentic. Sugar may need to re-work the recipe. They have raspberry lime rickeys in the summer, my favorite drink. I was really happy about that. It's totally one of those places I visit before going to someone's house to make sure I don't arrive empty-handed.

Delicious. I'm a rare sort that doesn't care for cupcakes, but their tarts are amazing and the BF loves the frosting-covered cupcake creations, so I can sort of attest to their deliciousness. Only complaint is the help. I hate being rushed. Please don't stand me in front of a ginormous display of unlabeled sweet treats and expect me to make an immediate decision. Give a girl a second to ponder her options - after all, if I'm coming here after my early gym routine, I gotta make sure those calories are going to be worth it.

One word- BRAMBLES! They are like fluffy clouds of heaven. Everything I've ever tried there is awesome. The staff is always friendly and bare with the customers as they look at the wide selection and try to decide what they want. My advice just get one of everything you wont regret it!

As a local and frequent patron, I'm a big fan of the place. But not of their cupcakes, which I think have way too much frosting that can be a bit bitter for my taste. (My little children disagree heartily, I might add.) But everything else I've had there was great: eclairs, danishes, cookies, moon pies, even the french bread. So by all means go, but choose wisely!

I love sugars cupcakes however customer service this morning was horrible. The man behind the counter was unfriendly and not helpful. I was looking for suggestion and he seemed like he didnt want to help me. I ordered 2 1/2 dozens of cupcakes, whoopie pies spending $85 and they would not give me take home boxes with out wanting to charging me. I am sure i will go back but not as often because i really choose to give my business to someone who appreciates it. party favors..the owner and staff have always been a positive and left happy and excited about my cupcakes.

I LOVE this bakery! I went in to grab some items for my folks for their early morning arrival and I could not decide, so I grabbed a few muffins, a few squares, a chocolate croissant and a danish. My folks are "foodies" and they LOVED all of it. My partner and I were very impressed with the freshness. We have gone back a few times for mixed fruit tarts and cannolli's and have continued our love for this bakery. Hit the parking lot on Corey St and walk the block for the easiest route.

For your 3 C's diet (cheesecake, cupcake, chocolate), head on over to Sugar Bakery in West Roxbury. Presentation and cleanliness does have some effect on your buying attitude. So when you walk in, the desserts are perfectly aligned and are eye grabbing. In the summer time I grab their lime rickeys while I am hauling their mini cheesecakes, almost raw chocolate chip cookies and oreo cookie cupcakes out the door. I haven't tried their brambles or pastries yet so I can't comment on that..just yet I have noticed a couple of the sweets have a hint of cinnamon, so if you're not a big fan, ask what the desserts are made out of. However, that single ingredient compliments very well. Staff is very helpful and sometimes recommends a dessert if you're racking your brain.

In a word: yum. Quite a selection of cupcakes, pastries, and tarts, and everything is made on-site. I'm a huge fan of the cupcakes which have lots of icing, with a little cupcake cap, and then more icing on top. A lot of their baked goods are also available at The Real Deal next door to them, and also at the new Real Deal location in Jamaica Plain. Great customer service- I got chatting with the owner who gave me a cupcake on the house! Prices are very fair- check it out!

I went for in for cup cakes but I made the mistake of going in hungry. Everything looked wonderful, I wanted one of everything. The owner was helping me, I was asking what the prices were but he wasn't really sure and then he went and yelled at someone about not having the right size box. He seemed to be agitated that I didn't know how much I was going to buy. They don't sell their pastries by the dozen, everything is individually priced, nothing is marked and they don't have a menu for the baked goods. The mini cup cakes are $1, the frosting was good but the cake was dry. I bought a little of this and a little of that, mostly the mini versions that cost $1.50 and they were good, but not great. The black and white cookies were $1.50 and good but I wasn't thrilled with the woopie pies. Presentation wise, everything was beautiful but everything I purchased was just good. The cakes were nicely decorated, but after presenting a cake to a customer that had a much less than perfect "Happy Birthday" written on it, the owner stated that he was just learning how to write on cakes. I know that if I was paying $25 for a plain 8" cake with some beautiful roses on it, I would expect that the writing would suit the cake. (I've seen nicer cake writing on cakes that came from Stop & Shop.) They obviously have some talented people working there, but I would rather give props to the talented decorators they have (they get 4 1/2 stars) and some advise to the owner, you have a beautiful place and a wonderful concept, if you want to be hands on, take a step back and watch, maybe try pastry school. I will probably go back, it's a new business and it takes time to get it right.

I picked up a selection of treats last night to bring for dessert to a friend's house. Got some cookies, tartlets (key lime and chocolate), cupcakes (oreo, milky way and yellow w/choc), a rather large whoopee pie and a couple of those controversial brambles, which I'd never heard of, never mind tasted. Everything was yummy, especially the brambles. I'll go back for more.

This is my all time favorite bakery. The whoopie pies are delicious, coffee is good and the cupcakes are simply to die for. My personal favorite is the oreo cupcake. The chocolate cake is moist and delicious, and the oreo filled frosting is delicious. It's hard to restrain myself each time I drive by! Parking is really not that bad. The only thing I would change is the ambiance, which could definitely use an upgrade.

I was very unpleasantly surprised with my BLT lunch to go yesterday 7-19-11. The bacon was undercooked and the onion strings were not as good as the past. In the past I would have given a grade of 4.5 and did not get around to it- my fault. Also I went to bakery section and saw a few flies in casing. Worker should take care of this immediately. Folks I am willing to give you guys another chance; please pick it up as I truly once loved you!!

I'm not really sure how I should rate this but I'll rate separately for cupcakes and service I received. Cupcakes: 4 stars Service: No stars What happened to me: I love sweets and I had a craving for a cupcake so I made a quick stop here on my way home. I only wanted one cupcake...which is probably a little more than $2? After obtaining my cupcake, I headed over to the cash register to pay for my little piece of heaven. However, there was a woman right in front of me who bought a bunch of cupcakes. Her total came to about 20 bucks. There were two cashiers at the one register, and the cashier swiped my CC for that other woman's purchase! wtcrp! 20 bucks for 1 cupcake!??!! so then the cashier had some trouble refunding the $$ to my CC...a manager was then called upon to assist in my refund. But then something worse happened...instead of refunding my $20, they charged me yet another $20!!! $40 is now charged on my CC...what...the...crp! after awhile of not figuring all this out (about 10 minutes)..I had just asked for $40 in cash for fear of being charged $60. Worse part of this: I still had to pay for my $2 cupcake. Lesson learned: I know I was partially to blame for this...cuz I used my CC for a $2 purchase...I don't usually do this, but even without cash, my sugar cravings overpower anything. I did end up going back there another time since I loved the cupcakes, but this time I ended up bringing cash! What I ended up getting both times: Oreo cupcake which was very delicious and moist. Good amount of frosting on the top, but I thought that was the best part...it was very smooth and perfectly sugary (for a cupcake at least!)

Inventive creations and some neat baked goods with pretty good prices. Always something new in this spot, but the hours are sort of strange. It is attached to the Real Deal which is cool so you can slide form one place to the other. In all not too bad! The help could use an upgrade though. Not too friendly here.

Not a fan of their chocolate cakes-could it be cinnamon in them? however the yellow cakes and white frosting are amazing. The strawberry shortcake is the best. Pastries are great too, as well as good breads. Their reeses piecescookies shouldn't be missed.

I went to Sugar for the first time last night. They had quite an array of cupcakes, including weird flavors like bubblegum and cotton candy (which did not appeal to me). I had a chocolate cupcake with cream cheese and chocolate frosting. It was quite delicious, although the cream cheese frosting wasn't nearly as "cream cheesy" as I'd hoped. (Side note: South End Buttery, in my opinion, still has the best cream cheese frosting in Boston.) However, the cake was moist and delicious and overall, I felt it was a steal for $2.36. My friend had the peanut butter and chocolate cupcake. She said it was good, though they use the "confectioner's" PB that doesn't really taste like real PB, so be warned. Overall, I'd say they're worth a try if you are in the area.

The cupcakes were very tasty and wonderfully decorated, but I had to write this review because they have the most amazing pumpkin pie Ive ever had. I love this season because of all the pumpkin lovin' at every eatery and Sugar definitely gave me another sinful treat to lust for all year long. We drove over 15 miles for the cupcakes and now I know we will return soon for another slice of that heavenly pumpkin pie. Heck, I might even buy a pie if they sell it whole. Anyways, do yourself a favor and throw the diet out the window on your drive there. Their treats are fan-freakin-tastic!

Moist cake, sugary and thick frosting, unique flavor combos, good looking morsels of delight. I saw a bunch of cupcakes I wanted to try and couldn't resist a chocolate oreo one - amazing. My roommate had one filled with caramel I took a bite of and it was the perfect combination of chocolate, vanilla and caramel. Another friend had a strawberry one that had a little straw in it where she could suck out the filling! Tres creative! Think I could eat one for breakfast? Yes please!

I'm continuing on my East Coast trek visiting family and friends, and I've decided to check out Boston's cupcake scene. Besides being a bread whore, I am a whore for sabroso cupcakes. And cupcakes should be MUY SABROSO! They're cupcakes for fuck's sake. Make them decadent, make them a diabetic's nightmare, let obesity reign if obesity be for the sake of thy cupcake! Nor should anyone refer to cupcakes as guilty pleasures. They are small, affordable (for the most part-I'll speak on that later on), and most businesses usually offer a smorgasbord of flavors. That's not guilty, that's the perfect storm of desserts during this recessionary apocalypse. But I digress. I researched a couple of places in Boston and its surrounding community. Since I had stayed the night in Jamaica Plain, I found Sugar wasn't all that far away. For the most part, it had received an average of 4 stars on Yelp. So I jetted off in the car after I made sure to run several miles to condition myself for a day of inhaling cupcakes faster than Jenna Jameson inhales protein shakes. For me, the litmus test of any good cupcake is the vanilla/vanilla. I'm just a vanilla kind of guy. Anyways, Sugar's vanilla/vanilla was a medium sized cupcake. Probably the size of the kind you'd make at home out of a Duncan Hines or Pillsbury box. And to tell you the truth, this cupcake could have been made from a box. It had the soft, spongy consistency of that homemade kind. Nothing special. But I usually value the icing over the cake two to one. The more sugary the better. This vanilla icing was sugary and rich, but it tasted generic. I expect a little more from independently owned bakeries than supermarket quality, and I felt like I could have either made this cupcake at home or bought one at Shaws. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed the cupcake. It's a fucking cupcake! But, I want more from these kinds of places. I want something more adult, something that feels a little more grownup as far as ingredients go. Spend more on high quality ingredients. Put some real vanilla bean in the vanilla. Something simple, but elegant. Something that rises your cupcakes above the tide of mediocrity. Now, Sugar does have an ample amount of crazy cupcakes. I appreciated their attempts at zaniness, at creativity, even if the cupcakes seemed to be more Speed Racer sludge than Donnie Darko decadence. They offered cotton candy cupcakes, caramel cupcakes, chocolate lovers cupcakes, carrot cake cupcakes, and some others I can't remember. Too many colors. But I tried Sugar's Milky Way cupcake, and I'd buy this one again before the vanilla (never a good sign). Built on a flimsy foundation of chocolate cake, this cupcake exploded upward in a orgy of mocha frosting topped with more cake topped with more frosting topped with caramel. I felt like I was eating a whoopee pie on top of a cupcake along with a Sugar Daddy. Absolutely obscene and obscenely delicious. I tore off half of the bottom half of cupcake for two reasons. One, the cake isn't anything special. Two, so much other shit was piled on top I couldn't get the damn thing in my mouth. Elegance, thy name is not Sugar. Overload, si. Anyways, I would try Sugar again. I mentioned prices before. Living in San Diego, cupcakes cost a three dollars. At Sugar, every cupcake was $2.36, and I appreciated this price reduction. They could have charged extra for their specialty cupcakes, but they do not, and I believe that's a sign of good business. However, the cupcakes in San Diego are slightly larger and of superior quality at least compared with Sugar's. Finally, the interior of Sugar is very warm and inviting. Exposed brick, high ceilings with open air ducts, various baking vocabulary (flour, butter, salt, anise, etc) printed on the walls, hanging ornamental lights that cast a tranquil glow off the orange painted walls. All of these things make Sugar a nice cafe to sit and enjoy your slow death. Four four-person tables provide decent seating. Note: I only went for cupcakes. However, Sugar does have a beautiful selection of cakes, cookies, pastries, and freshly baked bread.

This place is a style of bakery. Yes, the cupcakes are visually appealing. If you want to take your kids cupcakes at school or a birthday party and wow everyone with the visual appeal. This is your place. If you care what they taste like, this is not the place for you. I literally spit out the cupcake after the first bite. Dry, from a cake mix, cake with sickeningly sweet frosting. Both the cupcakes I got were stuffed and they are just stuffed with loads of frosting. I am surprised so many people like them but again I think it is a style. If you are looking for something exceptional, this is not the place for you. If you are looking for very americanized and trendy you will probably like it. To be fair I think they are good for their price point of 2.50 each. To make a profit at this price point they have to have to be mass produced with less attention given to quality. To make the calories worth it I would rather pay more and get something special.

I heard about these cupcakes from my boss and found an excuse to get some for a friend recovering from day surgery. Cupcakes are always the best medicine! I planned on picking up 4 and walked out with a dozen. They all looked amazing and crazy flavors! I was hoping to try a fluffernutter or marshmallow one, but both were sold out. We tried peppermint pattie (yummy), Elvis (pb & banana, amazing!!) and strawberry milkshake (awesome vanilla cake). All the cakes were really moist and the frosting was really tasty. I feel bad even saying this as I typically judge all cupcakes by the frosting, but there is too much frosting on some of them. I had to scoop some off but it was really good buttercream. I didn't try anything but cupcakes, but I will be back. Mmmm!!! Best I have had since Lulu's and WAY better than Sugar (best of Boston, HA!)

This place is a stone's throw from Five Guys in Dedham, so after my weekly burger pilgrimage last Saturday (and seeing the Globe's write-up of it) I went to check it out. The cupcakes were DELICIOUS. They were very fresh, and they had some fun, interesting flavors. I went with Fluffernutter (yum) and the chocolate marshmallow (which was not marshmallowy at all, I'm afraid, but still good). I don't like frosting all that much, so I had a big glob left over from each cupcake, but it was pretty good. And I'm sure all you frosting-loving weirdos will be all over it. I would definitely go back and try it again, my only complaint is that they don't have any signs for the cupcakes, and I had to ask the girl at the counter what everything was. Signage is very important, so I hope they do something about that!

I stopped into Sugar after a dentist appointment last week. I know. I know. Anyway... I took to go a tiny pate a chox (eclair) filled with whipped cream. The cream inside was perfectly sweetened and sooo fresh. The pastry was a bit stale, and tasted like it had been in the fridge for a looooong time. It was a tad disappointing, but I'll try them again. Super friendly staff and the place smelled heavenly...

I have to admit something. When I walk into a bakery and it looks pretty I assume they have spent more time on decoration than their baked good. Sugar is very pretty AND their baked goods are tasty. Their cupcakes, turnovers, and Bismark were excellent. They also made a rather tasty mocha. I was pleasantly surprised. We bought some olive oil bread to take home and it was delicious! Some little Italian cookies that we brought home were not quite as impressive, very bland. So, coming from a bakery snob, try this place out. I was pleasantly surprised and I think it was well worth the trip!

It's coming along, and I may add a star after I have sampled some of Sugar's goodies around Christmastime. My problem with it is that I just can't separate it from its predecessor at that location, the fabled Hanley's. I mean, Sugar is coming along well, and I love the cakes that come out of there. There are a few more items, such as some of the black and white pastries and the brambles that are really, really good...but they're not Hanley's. Very good, nonetheless, and worth a trip out of your way. Definately one of the best bakeries in Boston!

I absolutely love Sugar. Everything I have ever had from there is delicious and their bread is super yummy. After I discovered Sugar and The Real Deal I couldn't stop going back!!! I definitely recommend the cupcakes, I love the vanilla/vanilla and peanut butter and I've heard the Oreo and caramel are good too. Their cookies are delicious, especially when they have big sugar cookies with frosting (they have halloween ones now, they are amazing!). I also really like their cannolis and key lime tart. Sugar is everything you could ever want in a simple, small town bakery, it is something I never thought I could find in Boston and I'm so glad I did!

I recently moved to the area and have been there a numbre of times already. The fresh baked breads are amazing. The wall of cookies is great. I like to swing by on the way to work and grab an assortment for the office. It's a hit. The place is cute and nice to sit in and read a book or chat with friends. Owner is friendly and very present and the staff is friendly for the most part.

We used Sugar to provide cupcakes for our September 2007 wedding. Working with Lynn and Debbie, they helped us make some great selections (chocolate and yellow cakes with ganache toppings. The cupcakes were delicious and everyone enjoyed them. Well done!

Sugar is insane! I go out of my way to stop by this place to grab one of their cookies, cupcakes, or most recently a whoopie pie. The sugar cookies are nice and large not those little rinky dink ones you find in your grocery store bakery isle (although they do sell some small ones at Sugar). They hit up seasonal themes and for the fall they have had some great halloween colors worked into their pastries and cookies. The cupcakes are also pretty crazy, they are not too large where you would look at one and say there is no way i'll feel good about myself if I eat that whole thing but just the right size. Go for the oreo cupcake if you're a first timer. The confections are Not too expensive either. The only pitfall I have experienced was that if you want a coffee not everyone behind the counter knows how to whip up a latte so it might take a while if ordering one. However there is enough things to gawk at while they make it that the extra time seems to fly by.
